i say old chap that's just not cricket (as they would have said in the books i read as a child) :) i presume it's baseball but it certainly works for me as a piece of tension and anticipation you could always send tickets and air fare to those of us overseas :) cheers
Since there's no clock in baseball, there's no intrinsic reason, human mortality aside, that the game, and therefore the season, need ever end. There's always the possibility of one more extra inning.
The "regular season" will end in a few days. Unless . . .
tikkis, I guess "baseball" is primarily a summer kigo, but this one is about the coming of autumn and the desire to hold it at bay for a while--really, to hold time still. Baseball season extends from April (spring here) to the end of September, with postseason running through much of October.
Not only a lovely haiku, but prescient, as the last regular season (wild card tiebreaker) game between San Diego and Colorado actually did last 13 innings! But it's never really over, because there's always next year (and the playoffs of course).

And here I was thinking you guys weren't into Cricket. ;-)
Ah, cricket. There was a brief moment, about twenty years ago, when I thought I understood the game.
i see at least two meanings (although i'm not much into baseball) but i accept there's more...
anyway, it definitely works for me

I've seen many of them. Seems like it almost always ends the wrong way.:)
Baseball is life, andrew.
I have played some kind of miniature cricket, but I still have no idea about the rules! A long long time ago...
But seen in TV many times. (Still I don't understand it at all :-)
Nowadays I prefer betanque.
But the message in this poem is very seasonal one (=haiku!)

Well, cricket or baseball, I'm out!

kami
Don't we all want one more inning??
And, kami, wouldn't Met fans have preferred the last game to go on forever?
Pat, I know I do.
