Female Viagra i.e. Flibanserin, as called by many, is up for approval before FDA panel and may be approved next week. Flibanserin is a female libido enhancing drug that is designed to treat a condition in women described as Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder HSDD. The drug has been the centre of controversy as there are critics who are of the view that lack of sexual desires or fantasies causing emotional distress are a rather vague diagnosis.
"A federal advisory panel on Friday [18 June 2010] unanimously voted against recommending approving [Flibanserin]. . . . Such advisory votes do not always influence the F. D. A.'s final decision on a drug, but often they do." NYT 19 June 2010
The drug's purpose is to elevate sexual desire. One way (the senryu way, I suppose) of looking at it is to say the drug would serve women who don't want sex, but who want to want it.
"What do women want?" is, of course, a familiar expression of (typical?) male bafflement. It was perhaps most famously asked by Dr. Sigmund Freud.
