Well, polona, pat's comment (below) may be illuminating. A lot of flags went on display at the time of the invasion of Iraq; some seem still around as a result of inertia. As Santa Claus in mid-January may suggest, it's over. But, Vaughn, you may be right, and that, again, brings us back to pat's witty observation.

being a foreigner, this probably has a different meaning to me than to americans. but what i see is a senryu with a strong social note.
