down sunlit rocks

down sunlit rocks
pulling a river behind it—
the waterfall

I like the image of the waterfall pulling a river. Great description.

Niagara falls? Or somewhere near the Hudson River?

anon: it's really an archetypal waterfall, rather than a particular one. I wrote this for a kukai (competition) in which "waterfall" was the assigned kigo (season word: waterfall indicates summer in haiku tradition). I drew on my memory of waterfalls. The haiku took third place, by the way.

That's a beautiful image.
(I've been offline during a house move and only just up and running again. Thanks for the visit. You were right about the ending of dusk: I wanted the ambiguity to be there.)
