Thank you, John, Doug, Monika, and Gillena. My intention was to put the reader in something like the position I was in: sympathetically aware of another's pain, but ignorant of the cause and unable to do anything about it.

Thanks for mentioning the outcome of the Caribbean Kigo Kukai voting, Gillena. I'll post the poem that won recognition.
