Thanks, Frank and Adelaide. I did want to complicate and open up our understanding of "mother."
My granddaughter Michelle (now 5) never knew Alma, my late wife and her biological grandmother, who died over a quarter of a century before Michelle was born. Pat, my wife and Jim's stepmother, is the only paternal grandmother she has ever known.
But this is, for me, also about my son and his stepmother and is meant as a tip of the hat to all the women who have filled the often difficult position of stepmother.
And I dedicate it to all who have served in the role of mother, under whatever title.

Does that make her a step-grandmother? Nice that everyone gets along well.
