Thanks, gabi, for your poem and for the link. This particular Zen garden is within the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park, San Diego, California, which we visited in February.

Thanks, Pat. One constant theme of haiku, in my view is "Listen to the silence"--or, more precisely, "Listen to the silences."

Thanks, prado. In my comment to dustin, I spoke as a formalist, if you will, rather than as a moralist. Thus, I referred to an aspect of the poem as "facile." But I think you and I are using different terminology to talk about very much the same thing. Don't know about "natural as breathing," though. I was breathing when I was a day old. On the other hand . . .
